Bella Ramsey reveals why she decided to publicly share autism diagnosis

Bella Ramsey Expresses Pride in Public Autism Disclosure

Actress Bella Ramsey, known for her role in “The Last of Us,” is embracing her decision to publicly share her autism diagnosis. The 21-year-old star, who identifies as nonbinary and is comfortable with any pronouns, conveyed her positive feelings at “The Last Of Us” Season 2 premiere red carpet event in Los Angeles on Monday, speaking with Entertainment Tonight.

Embracing Authenticity and Understanding

“I feel great about it,” Ramsey stated. “It’s just enjoyable, and as I was saying, it provides context for how people perceive me. If they wonder, ‘Why is Bella acting a bit differently?’, now they understand. It’s like, now you know.”

Ramsey indicated that the choice to disclose her diagnosis publicly was not a difficult deliberation.

A Natural Revelation

“It didn’t feel like this monumental decision to announce it to people,” she explained. “Learning about it has become integrated into my daily life, assisting in my self-awareness.”

“There’s no reason to keep it from people,” Ramsey added. “If anything, it feels more liberating for me.”

Positive Reception and Encouragement

In a conversation with “Extra TV” also on the red carpet, Ramsey spoke about the “beautiful” responses she has received since making her personal announcement.

“I’ve received incredibly kind messages from individuals I’ve connected with, allowing me to offer hope and encouragement. It’s been particularly rewarding to support young people who are struggling, those recently diagnosed and uncertain about its implications. Feeling like I’ve been a source of positivity for them has been truly wonderful,” she shared.

“It’s simply great to be here and be myself, as I always have been, but now, if I seem a little different, people understand the reason,” Ramsey further commented.

Diagnosis and Self-Discovery

In a recent interview with British Vogue, Ramsey revealed that her autism diagnosis stemmed from a conversation with a “The Last of Us” crew member whose autistic daughter recognized traits in the actor.

Ramsey described herself as a “unique individual” and “solitary person,” noting she “always considered” the possibility of autism. Therefore, receiving confirmation brought a sense of relief.

“It empowers me to navigate the world with greater self-compassion when I encounter challenges with routine tasks that appear effortless for others,” she expressed about her “liberating” diagnosis.

Autism and Acting

“I’ve always been observant and learned through observation,” the “Game of Thrones” performer continued. “Having to consciously learn social cues and interactions has ironically aided my acting. In acting, I’m given a call time, wardrobe instructions, stage direction, and even dietary guidelines.”

“The Last of Us” Season 2 Anticipation

Ramsey stars in “The Last Of Us” alongside Pedro Pascal, who also attended the premiere. Season 2 of the critically acclaimed series is set to debut on April 13 on HBO and Max, continuing the post-apocalyptic drama.
