Mary Berry issues seven-word warning as she admits leaving house to avoid row with husband

Dame Mary Berry’s Marriage Advice: Secrets to a Lasting Union

Celebrated baker Dame Mary Berry, known for her role on the Great British Bake Off, has disclosed her strategy for maintaining marital harmony: taking space to avert disagreements. Marking her 90th birthday, Dame Mary recently shared insights into her nearly 60-year marriage to Paul Hunnings, emphasizing “love and respect” as foundational. However, she revealed another crucial element: “Also we never raise our voices at each other because, you know, we love each other.”

Taking Space to Avoid Conflict

Dame Mary explained her practical approach to diffusing potential arguments. When experiencing frustration, she employs a straightforward approach to de-escalate potential conflict: “If I feel irritated,” she disclosed, “I often pause before speaking. I’ll retreat to the greenhouse to tend to my cuttings.”

Continuing her conversation with Vogue magazine, Dame Mary stressed another key principle for a successful relationship: “Never go to sleep on a quarrel.”

Married to Hunnings since 1966, the couple has three children: Annabel, Thomas, and the late William, who passed away in 1989.

Broadcasting Career and Culinary Stardom

Beyond relationship advice, Dame Mary Berry has enjoyed a distinguished broadcasting career, adding to her culinary achievements. Already a celebrated figure in the culinary sphere, Berry’s television debut was in the 1970s on ‘Afternoon Plus’ with Judith Chalmers.

Her broadcasting career flourished, including appearances in programs like ‘Mary Berry Cooks’ and ‘Mary Berry’s Absolute Favourites.’

Great British Bake Off Recognition

Dame Mary Berry gained widespread recognition as a co-judge on the popular Great British Bake Off alongside Paul Hollywood from its inception in 2010 until her departure in 2016. Dame Prue Leith succeeded her and continues in the role.

90th Birthday Celebrations

To commemorate her 90th birthday, Dame Mary Berry will appear on a special episode of ‘The One Show’ with presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp at 7 pm this evening.
