Outrage after White House accidentally texts journalist war plans: ‘Huge screw-up’

Security Breach Exposes Sensitive Military Plans, Sparking Bipartisan Condemnation

A major security lapse has ignited bipartisan anger after revelations that high-ranking officials from the Trump administration inadvertently disseminated highly sensitive military strategies via a Signal group chat, which was also accessed by a journalist.

Schumer Demands Investigation into “Stunning” Intelligence Breach

On Monday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer addressed the Senate floor, denouncing the incident as “one of the most astonishing breaches of military intelligence I have encountered in a very, very long time.” He urged Republican colleagues to join calls for a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the circumstances, assess the resulting damage, and implement preventative measures for the future.

Lawmakers Allege Criminal Activity and Security Concerns

Senator Chris Coons of Delaware asserted on social media platform X that “Every government official involved in this text exchange has potentially committed a crime – even unintentionally.” He further questioned the administration’s capacity to safeguard national security, stating, “We cannot trust anyone in this dangerous administration to keep Americans safe.”

Congressional Inquiry Threatened Over “Fubar” Incident

Representative Pat Ryan of New York described the breach as “Fubar,” an acronym for a severely compromised situation. He declared his intention to initiate an immediate congressional investigation should House Republicans fail to take action.

Report Details Accidental Inclusion of Journalist in Chat

According to reporting by The Atlantic, editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was mistakenly added to a Signal messaging group comprising over a dozen senior Trump administration figures. Participants reportedly included Vice-President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and others.

Hegseth accuses journalist of ‘peddling hoaxes’ after secret Yemen war plans shared on app – video

Sensitive Yemen Strike Plans Exposed

The report highlights a significant lapse in the handling of national security data and a potentially unlawful communication channel. Sensitive military plans concerning airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen were reportedly shared casually within an encrypted group chat equipped with automatic deletion features.

Cybersecurity Concerns Raised

Congressman Ro Khanna of California expressed concern to The Guardian, stating, “It has projected weakness to our adversaries.” He emphasized the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures, adding, “We need to take cybersecurity far more seriously, and I intend to take a leading role in this effort.”

Intelligence Committee Leader “Horrified” by Leak

Jim Himes, the leading Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, who has overseen numerous classified briefings, conveyed his dismay, stating he was “horrified” by the Signal group chat leak containing imminent war plans.

“Brazen Violation” of National Security Laws

Himes further commented, “If substantiated, these actions represent a brazen violation of laws and regulations designed to safeguard national security, including the safety of American personnel in hazardous environments.” He underscored the severe risks associated with transmitting classified information on unclassified systems, noting that subordinate officials engaging in similar conduct would likely face security clearance revocation and criminal investigation.

Senator Warner Warns of Increased Risk to Americans

Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, voiced his concern via social media, stating, “This administration is handling our nation’s most sensitive classified information recklessly, thereby compromising the security of all Americans.”

Calls for “Substantive Investigation” Mount

House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries demanded a “substantive investigation into this unacceptable and irresponsible national security breach,” describing the leak as “completely outrageous and morally reprehensible.”

Republican Senator Acknowledges “Huge Screw-Up”

Republican Senator John Cornyn characterized the incident as “a huge screw-up” to reporters, suggesting an interagency review to determine the causes of this significant security failure.

White House Confirms Leak, Downplays Security Impact

The White House acknowledged the security breach. National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes confirmed to The Guardian, “This does appear to be an authentic message chain, and we are currently reviewing how an unintended number was added to the group.”

White House Defends “Policy Coordination”

However, the White House attempted to minimize the severity of the leak, with Hughes portraying the messages as illustrating “deep and thoughtful policy coordination among senior officials.”

Hughes further asserted, “The continued success of operations against the Houthis demonstrates that there were no threats to troops or national security” resulting from the breach.

Lawmakers Dismiss White House Defense

Despite the White House’s attempts to downplay the incident, most lawmakers remain unconvinced. Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island posted on X, labeling it “one of the most egregious failures of operational security and common sense I have ever witnessed.”

Past Criticisms Resurface

The incident has also brought renewed scrutiny to prior criticisms made by some officials involved in the chat regarding similar security lapses. In 2024, National Security Advisor Waltz criticized Jake Sullivan, Biden’s National Security Advisor, for allegedly sending Top Secret messages to Hillary Clinton’s private email, questioning the Justice Department’s inaction.

In 2023, Hegseth publicly criticized the Biden administration’s “flippant” handling of classified documents, arguing on Fox News that a lack of accountability at the top created a “two-tiered justice system.”

Hegseth Denies Leaking “War Plans”

When questioned about the group chat on Monday, Hegseth denied sharing “war plans” and dismissed Goldberg as “deceitful and highly discredited,” while notably avoiding direct refutation of specific details in The Atlantic’s report.

Calls for Hegseth’s Resignation or Removal

Ken Martin, chair of the Democratic National Committee, responded to the accidental leak by urging Hegseth to resign or be removed from his position as Secretary of Defense.

Martin stated, “It is unequivocally clear that our servicemen and women deserve better, and our national security cannot remain entrusted to Hegseth’s incompetent and unqualified leadership.”

Potential Violation of Federal Record-Keeping Laws

The disclosure also raises concerns about potential violations of the Federal Records Act, which mandates the preservation of government communications, typically for a minimum of two years. The Signal messages in question were configured to automatically delete in less than four weeks.

Bipartisan Agreement on Security Protocol Breach

Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, summarized the bipartisan sentiment, stating, “Classified information must not be transmitted on unsecured channels, particularly to individuals lacking security clearances. Period.”
