Gérard Depardieu’s trial on sexual assault charges starting in France

Gérard Depardieu Stands Trial in Paris on Sexual Assault Charges

Renowned French actor Gérard Depardieu is on trial in Paris starting Monday, facing accusations of sexually assaulting two women during a 2021 film production.

Details of the Allegations

Depardieu, aged 76, is accused of groping a 54-year-old set decorator and a 34-year-old assistant director during the filming of “Les Volets Verts” (“The Green Shutters”).

Prosecutors contend that the incidents involved lewd remarks and inappropriate physical contact. One alleged incident describes Depardieu using his legs to restrain one of the women before touching her inappropriately in front of other crew members.

Both women have lodged formal complaints. Their identities are being withheld to protect alleged victims of sexual assault.

Depardieu’s Denial

The celebrated actor refutes the charges.

In an open letter published in Le Figaro in October 2023, Depardieu asserted, “Never, but never, have I abused a woman.”

Trial Postponement and Actor’s Health

Originally scheduled for October 2024, the trial was postponed due to Depardieu’s health concerns.

His lawyer, Jérémie Assous, stated that Depardieu had recently undergone a quadruple heart bypass and suffers from diabetes.

However, a medical expert appointed by the court has determined that he is fit to stand trial.

He is expected to be present for the two-day hearing, reportedly with scheduled breaks.

First Trial Amidst Multiple Accusations

This trial marks the first time Depardieu, a leading figure in French cinema, faces legal proceedings concerning sexual assault allegations.

Approximately 20 women have previously accused him of misconduct, but no other case has progressed to court.

Prior cases were dismissed due to insufficient evidence or expiration of the statute of limitations.

Trial Proceedings

The court is expected to hear witness testimony during the trial. A verdict is not anticipated immediately.
