Over 50,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza war, Hamas-run authority says

Gaza Conflict Death Toll Exceeds 50,000, Reports Indicate

Health authorities in Gaza reported on Sunday that the Palestinian death toll from the ongoing conflict has surpassed 50,000.

Casualty Figures Unverified

The reported figures, provided by the Hamas-run health ministry, do not differentiate between combatants and civilians. These numbers are currently awaiting independent verification.

International Bodies View Figures as Credible

Despite the lack of independent confirmation, international organizations, including the United Nations, consider the reported casualty numbers to be largely credible.

Conflict Escalation Following October 7 Attack

The present hostilities were triggered by the October 7, 2023, assault on Israel by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, and affiliated extremist factions.

The attack resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities in Israel, and the abduction of over 250 individuals to the Gaza Strip.

Ceasefire Ends, Hostilities Resume

A six-week ceasefire, which commenced in January, recently concluded. Israel has since resumed military actions, leading to a surge in Palestinian casualties this week.

Fresh Israeli Operations in Southern Gaza

According to recent media reports from Sunday, approximately 30 individuals have been killed in renewed Israeli operations in southern Gaza.

Reports of Attacks in Rafah and Khan Younis

WAFA, the Palestinian news agency, detailed multiple attacks, including drone strikes, in the areas of Rafah and Khan Younis.

These attacks reportedly targeted residential buildings and vehicles.

Military Warns of Offensive in Rafah

Prior to these incidents, the Israeli military had issued warnings to residents of the Tal al-Sultan district in Rafah, indicating an impending “offensive against terrorist organizations.”

Residents were urged to evacuate the area. Social media videos have emerged depicting civilians fleeing Rafah on foot, many carrying possessions and accompanied by young children.
