Petrol and diesel owners told to keep bowl of water on their passenger seat for one reason

Fuel Efficiency Tips: Drive Like You Have a Bowl of Water

Automotive specialists at Vanarama suggest adopting a gentle driving style to maximize fuel efficiency. Their advice centers around the concept of driving as if transporting a bowl of water on the passenger seat.

Gentle Driving Techniques for Fuel Savings

Minimizing harsh braking and acceleration is crucial for fuel conservation. Experts emphasize that aggressive braking converts the kinetic energy, derived from fuel consumption, into unproductive heat within the braking system.

To optimize fuel usage, avoid excessive engine revving during acceleration. Shift gears smoothly and progressively, maintaining sensible engine speeds without straining the engine by using too high a gear.

Fuel Price Predictions and Current Costs

Earlier in the month, motoring organization RAC indicated that petrol pump prices should decrease by at least 6 pence per litre.

The motoring assistance firm also anticipated a reduction in diesel costs, forecasting a fall of approximately 3 pence per litre.

Recent data from RAC Fuel Watch indicates the national average price for unleaded petrol is currently 136.6 pence per litre, while diesel is priced at 143.31 pence per litre.

The Water Bowl Driving Method Explained

Nick Zapolski, Founder of ChooseMyCar.com, highlighted that the “water bowl” technique serves as an effective reminder to drive more cautiously and smoothly.

He explained, “Keeping an open bowl of water on your passenger seat is an excellent discouragement against abrupt acceleration and braking.”

“While seemingly unconventional, it functions as a straightforward and effective method to promote gentle driving. Rapid acceleration will cause water spillage, serving as an immediate visual cue.”

“Similarly, harsh braking from high speeds will result in water spillage onto the seat. For best results, small cereal bowls, filled with water to approximately an inch from the rim, are recommended.”
