Molly McCann Announces UFC Retirement Following Defeat to Thainara
British mixed martial artist Molly McCann has declared her retirement from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) after her recent loss to Alexia Thainara. The Liverpool-born fighter submitted to debutant Thainara at the O2 Arena in London, subsequently announcing the end of her professional career, stating her performance was “not good enough.”
The 34-year-old McCann, with a record of seven wins in 14 UFC bouts, concluded her fighting journey on Saturday night. She tapped out to a submission hold with just 28 seconds remaining in the first round. Following the match, Thainara celebrated in the Octagon, and McCann delivered a heartfelt address to the crowd.
McCann’s Retirement Speech Surprises
It is uncommon for defeated fighters to address the audience after a match, leading to speculation when McCann stepped up to the microphone. Her removal of her gloves further suggested an impending retirement announcement.
“Thank you and good night, UFC,” McCann began. “UFC, Dana, Gunther, Mick, everyone. I entered this sport at 24, walked into that gym with my team, and have given you my heart and soul.”
“However, tonight’s performance against an opponent on short notice was insufficient. I am not here solely for financial gain. The UFC deserves better, I deserve better, and the fans deserve better. Therefore, from a girl hailing from Norris Green who has had the opportunity to compete in these arenas, thank you immensely.”
“To young girls watching at home, look at what I achieved with just two hands and two elbows; I gave it my best effort. UFC Europe, UFC PI, the entire UFC, thank you deeply. And Dana, if you ever need a European ambassador, I am available.”
Emotional Farewell in the Octagon
McCann then retrieved her gloves, kissed them, and raised them to the audience before placing them in the center of the Octagon, a symbolic gesture of retirement.
‘Meatball Molly’s’ UFC Legacy
McCann’s passionate fighting style had established her as a prominent British MMA personality. Nicknamed ‘Meatball Molly’ due to her past employment at Subway before her professional career, she resonated with fans.
Close Bond with Paddy Pimblett
A particularly poignant moment was the presence of fellow Liverpudlian fighter Paddy Pimblett ringside, visibly emotional as McCann concluded her career. The two fighters, who developed a close friendship after meeting during training in 2013, have consistently supported each other’s careers. Having experienced four defeats in her last five fights, McCann determined that the time was right to retire from UFC competition.
