Story of Kate's cancer battle: A year ago the Princess made her unprecedented announcement. Now for first time REBECCA ENGLISH tells how Kate fought back from 'battering' of cancer

Princess of Wales: A Year of Resilience and Renewed Strength

A delicate face reflecting both grace and quiet fortitude: this image epitomizes the Princess of Wales. Twelve months prior, she conveyed a momentous and profoundly touching video message to the global community, revealing her cancer diagnosis and commencement of early-stage chemotherapy.

Seated on a bench against a backdrop of daffodils, she articulated the ‘immense shock’ of the diagnosis and directly addressed fellow cancer patients: ‘To everyone grappling with this illness, in any form, please hold onto your faith and optimism. You are not isolated.’

Contrasting Appearances: From Announcement to Public Engagements

Recent appearances present a stark contrast to that somber announcement. A radiant Catherine – truly, no other descriptor suffices – was observed raising a toast to the Irish Guards on St Patrick’s Day. Further instances include her affectionate gaze towards her husband at the Commonwealth Day service and again at the England-Wales rugby match.

It is evident that following a turbulent year, William and Catherine are, thankfully, in a ‘considerably improved situation’.

“It is genuinely heartening to witness their progress,” confided a close acquaintance.

Health and Wellbeing: A Continuing Priority

Her well-being remains paramount. This includes a diet rich in healthy antioxidants, regular gym sessions, and maximizing time outdoors, especially with her family.

While Catherine understandably prioritizes long-term recuperation, she also appeared at ease while enjoying a half-pint of Guinness earlier in the week. Dressed elegantly in bottle green, adorned with shamrock sprigs, she engaged in conversation with soldiers following the Irish Guards’ annual parade – an event she attended in her capacity as Colonel of the Regiment.

Two days prior, she was seen beaming amongst the England rugby squad as they celebrated their victory over Wales in Cardiff. As patron of England’s Rugby Football Union, while William is patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, the couple has always enjoyed their spirited rivalry.

One year ago, the Princess of Wales delivered her impactful and deeply moving video address to the world, disclosing her cancer diagnosis.

A striking contrast to the Princess’s recent engagements, such as her glowing presence at the Commonwealth Day service.

Signs of Regained Normality and Future Outlook

Equally telling is the sight of William enthusiastically supporting his favored Aston Villa, or participating in exercises with the Mercians in Estonia this week. There’s a palpable sense of normalcy being restored.

“I believe many have rarely witnessed them happier,” remarked one insider.

However, it’s crucial to maintain perspective.

Late last year, it was indicated that while Catherine would undertake a limited number of royal commitments throughout the initial half of 2025, there was no urgency for a full-time return to royal duties.

“As cancer survivors understand, recovery remains demanding. Her health endured a significant setback last year. I cannot emphasize this enough, regardless of her current healthy appearance,” a source stressed.

Currently, there are no imminent plans for major overseas tours, although aides are closely monitoring the situation.

“For now, the approach is cautious and consistent. There is no deviation from the previously communicated plan, which entails a gradual and measured return to royal life,” another insider added.

Yet, comparing her present state to this time last year, the transformation is immense.

The Impact of the Video Message and Overcoming Speculation

Reflecting on that period, it’s almost impossible to fully express the profound impact of her video message. This impact stemmed both from the widespread public shock it generated and the dignified manner in which she chose to convey it – notably, and unusually within royal protocol, on her own terms.

Within the typically bustling newsroom of the Daily Mail, an absolute hush fell as colleagues congregated around television screens to watch it during the flagship 6 pm news broadcast.

I too watched, even though I had been privately aware of the news for approximately two hours, having been briefed about her diagnosis and previewed the video prior to its public release.

While Catherine is understandably prioritizing long-term recovery, she also appeared relaxed while enjoying a half-pint of Guinness earlier this week.

Two days prior, she was beaming amidst the England rugby team as they celebrated their victory over Wales in Cardiff.

Social media, as you may recall, had been in overdrive for weeks, rife with outrageous, demeaning, and often sordid conjecture regarding Catherine’s absence from public life following significant abdominal surgery in January.

Despite Kensington Palace’s pleas (where only a select few staff members were privy to the actual situation) for privacy and time for the Princess’s recovery, the prolonged absence of one of the most globally recognized figures, coupled with limited explanation, had – perhaps inevitably – fueled increasingly intense speculation about the reasons behind it.

Indeed, it became the dominant topic of conversation.

Even my physician inquired during a medical appointment if I possessed any knowledge of the true circumstances. Such an extended hospital stay (the Princess was hospitalized at the London Clinic for two weeks) was highly atypical, they noted, and had sparked considerable discussion amongst their own staff.

Frankly, I was already sensing that the situation was considerably more serious than Kensington Palace was disclosing.

In fact, the week preceding the Princess’s broadcast, this suspicion was validated by a highly credible source, who emphasized the severity of her condition leading up to her surgery.

Another contact also revealed that the increasingly distressed and frustrated couple were contemplating issuing a public statement.

However, even I was unaware of the gravity of the situation when a message unexpectedly appeared in my inbox at 3:30 pm that Friday, March 22nd, inviting me to a confidential media briefing just 30 minutes later.

Subsequently, amidst the flurry of writing thousands of words in preparation for the news embargo to be lifted, I didn’t initially consider the specific timing.

It has now been confirmed to me that, akin to every other facet of the statement, the timing was entirely deliberate.

At 4 pm, when our video conference call commenced, the Wales’s children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – had departed school for the Easter break and were traveling to Norfolk. This ensured their distance from the anticipated media frenzy.

Regardless of the ensuing commentary’s intentions, neither William nor Catherine desired to subject ‘the kiddies’ (as she affectionately calls them) to it.

“Protecting her children has been central to every decision she has made this year,” stated a source familiar with the events.

“I recognize it’s a cliché, but cancer is undeniably a great leveler, and I believe it made Catherine more relatable.

In a video alongside William and their children, Kate announced the completion of her chemotherapy treatment.

“We perceived her not as a princess but as an individual, conveying, ‘I have cancer and have spent recent months preparing my children to understand my ill health.’ I believe this resonated deeply with many.”

Personal Account and Combating Misinformation

I am informed that the Princess personally authored every word of her 371-word statement, without any input from her press office at Kensington Palace.

“These were unequivocally her personal words, her narrative, and she wished to share it,” a source affirmed.

Another added: “It was powerful, and even more so because it originated so personally from her. Only she could genuinely convey her emotions.

“The Princess also aimed to ensure her message reflected the experiences of countless others worldwide who receive the same life-altering diagnosis. This was a perspective solely she could share with them.”

The subsequent personally written and recorded messages in June and September – alongside a social media announcement in January confirming her remission – further solidify the couple’s unwavering commitment to narrate this journey in their preferred manner.

In part, this approach stems from the couple’s sometimes avowed determination to ‘control the narrative.’

As public figures reliant on public funds, only time will reveal the long-term sustainability of this strategy.

However, sources close to the couple have disclosed an additional factor.

Both they and their team were genuinely alarmed by the discovery that a significant proportion of the rumors and speculation last year was attributed to the manipulation of Russian ‘bots’.

Extensive research by the BBC last year indicated that security investigators believed a Russia-based disinformation group intentionally amplified and contributed to the surge of social media conspiracy theories surrounding the Princess’s health.

In the weeks leading up to her video message, there was a noticeable escalation in online rumors and often outlandish claims about her health. This intensified the already immense emotional strain on the couple.

Data analysis revealed ‘distinct indicators’ of a coordinated campaign (apparently disseminating and augmenting false claims is simpler and harder to trace than initiating misinformation from scratch), presumably aimed at destabilizing the Royal Family, perceived as a unifying force in the UK.

“It was already a tumultuous period, but the couple and their team initially failed to recognize that the Russians were manipulating the algorithm,” a source revealed.

“This was deeply concerning and contributed to the conclusion that only a personal communication from the Princess would effectively counteract the misinformation.”

Looking Ahead: Travel and Family Priorities

While her return to ‘normal’ life remains gradual and steady, Catherine has expressed initial thoughts about broadening her horizons.

Although a full-time return to royal engagements – including official overseas travel – appears unlikely to fully materialize until autumn, during her Irish Guards visit, she conveyed her desire to travel more extensively with her children when feasible.

Recalling her and William’s official tour to Australia and New Zealand in 2014, when George was still an infant, she remarked: ‘George is fascinated that he has visited Australia and New Zealand.’

‘I would love to revisit with them [the children] now. It’s a matter of finding the time. But I adore traveling…’

While perhaps lighthearted conversation, the comment once again underscores the Princess’s priorities.

“She has been profoundly touched by the public’s response and is immensely grateful for their support,” a source stated. “Above all, her recent experiences have deepened her appreciation for her blessings – her husband, her children, and her family.”

And clearly, these experiences have further strengthened this remarkable woman’s resolve to live life authentically, on her own terms.
