Royal Expert Contrasts Fashion Approaches of Princess Kate and Duchess Meghan
A royal commentator has drawn attention to a notable distinction in the sartorial choices of Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
Princess Catherine’s Evolving Style Praised for Confidence
During a recent “Palace Confidential” podcast episode, host Jo Elvin observed Princess Catherine’s “confident and experimental” evolution in her wardrobe selections.
Speaking with columnist Sarah Vine, Elvin suggested the Princess might occasionally incorporate emerging designers, while emphasizing her adherence to royal protocol and expectations.
Vine commented, “She refrains from overtly publicizing her attire. It’s not her objective to make fashion her defining characteristic, yet she is expected to present herself well and maintain a degree of stylishness appropriate for her position as a young woman.”
Vine elaborated, “Public expectation dictates this role. Women in their forties generally possess a stronger sense of personal style and confidence, which is clearly evident in her presentation.”
“Jackie O Style” vs. Brand Promotion Perceptions
Vine characterized Princess Catherine’s style as reminiscent of “Jackie O,” highlighting her “innate confidence” and apparent understanding of her “strengths” and “limitations” in fashion. However, her perspective differed when discussing Meghan Markle.
Regarding Princess Catherine, Vine concluded, “Her current sartorial confidence is such that the specific garments almost become secondary.”
“With the Duchess of Sussex, during her time in the royal family, there was a recurring perception that her clothing choices served, in part, to promote specific brands. This impression is absent in Catherine’s approach. I don’t believe brand promotion is her motivation.”
Princess Catherine’s Royal Journey
Catherine, wife of Prince William and future Queen Consort, first encountered the heir to the throne at the University of St Andrews in 2001. Their relationship commenced in 2003 during their university years.
Early Reservations and Contrasting Styles
Recent reports indicate Queen Camilla initially held reservations about Catherine, as royal analyst Tom Quinn noted in the Channel 5 documentary, “The Middletons: Modern Royals-in-Law.”
Quinn stated he understood Camilla “wasn’t entirely enthusiastic” about Catherine due to differing interests, such as shooting and equestrian pursuits. However, he acknowledged their relationship subsequently strengthened.
Conversely, Meghan Markle’s high-fashion choices gained considerable attention in her Netflix docuseries, “Harry & Meghan.”
According to reports, the Duchess of Sussex showcased clothing and jewelry reportedly valued at £130,000 throughout her program.
