EU country moves to 'zero asylum' and shows UK how it's done

Denmark Adopts Stricter Stance on Migration, Citing Strain on European Daily Life

Danish Prime Minister Aligns with Concerns Over Mass Migration

In a notable move, a European Union nation is intensifying its efforts to curb mass migration, with its center-left leader echoing concerns previously voiced by figures like US Vice President JD Vance regarding the impact on European societies. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, a prominent social democrat within the EU, has adopted a position on migration that resonates with perspectives similar to those held by Donald Trump.

“Mass Migration a Threat to European Daily Life,” States Frederiksen

“I view the current scale of migration into Europe as a challenge to the everyday functioning of European nations,” asserted Frederiksen, leader of the affluent Scandinavian welfare state. Her statement aligns with remarks made by Vance at the Munich Security Conference, where he suggested similar anxieties. Frederiksen elaborated, “Whether examining crime statistics, labor market pressures, or feelings of insecurity in local communities, it is often the most vulnerable populations who bear the brunt of these consequences.”

Echoes of Trump-Era Immigration Concerns

Frederiksen’s remarks bear a resemblance to previously articulated perspectives on immigration from figures such as Trump and Vance. These viewpoints often suggest that migrant populations present competition for domestic jobs and contribute to a decline in national security.

Earlier this year, Vance addressed EU leaders, reportedly characterizing immigration as a more pressing concern than the threat posed by Russia.

Vance stated, “No electorate on this continent cast their ballots with the intention of opening borders to uncontrolled influxes of undocumented immigrants.”

He further commented, “However, on issues like Brexit in England, voters have expressed a desire for change. Across Europe, there is a growing trend of citizens electing political leaders who pledge to regain control over migration flows.”

Denmark Implements Stringent Immigration Measures

The Danish government has adopted a comparably firm position, putting into effect some of the most restrictive immigration policies within Europe.

“Zero Asylum” Policy and Deterrent Measures

These measures, sometimes referred to as a “zero asylum” approach, encompass several controversial actions:

  • Asset Seizure: Confiscating valuables from asylum seekers to offset accommodation expenses.
  • Expedited Deportations: Streamlining deportations, even for settled individuals from countries like Syria, deemed safe by Danish authorities.
  • Deterrent Advertising: Running public awareness campaigns in countries of origin to discourage potential migrants from seeking asylum in Denmark.

“No Ghetto” Law and Offshore Processing

The “No Ghetto” legislation, perhaps the most contentious policy, seeks to reduce the concentration of foreign-born residents in specific Danish neighborhoods.

Furthermore, legislation enacted in 2021 permits the relocation of asylum seekers to processing centers located in countries outside the EU. This strategy has been associated with a significant reduction in asylum applications, with approximately 864 applications approved in 2024.

Political Context: Social Democrats’ Stance

Frederiksen’s Social Democrats achieved a significant electoral victory in the 2022 Danish General Election, securing their best result in two decades with 28% of the national vote. This outcome underscores the domestic political support for their approach to immigration.
