Roku slammed over automatic ads playing at startup: ‘Considering jumping ship now’

Roku Users Voice Displeasure Over Newly Implemented Ad Display

While encountering advertisements has become commonplace with the proliferation of streaming services, Roku users are expressing significant frustration over a recent update. Numerous individuals have reported being compelled to view advertisements even before accessing the main menu of their devices, sparking widespread discontent.

User Outcry on Reddit

Earlier this week, Roku customers flocked to the online forum Reddit to voice their annoyance. Many described experiencing unsolicited and repetitive advertisements immediately upon launching their Roku operating system, pushing their patience to the limit.

One user initiated a thread in the r/Roku subreddit, questioning, “Hello! I just activated my Roku and was presented with an unskippable movie trailer prior to reaching the standard Roku home screen. Is anyone else encountering this?”

This issue quickly proved to be widespread, as numerous users corroborated the experience in the comments, confirming it was not an isolated incident.

“This also occurred for me today. Should this persist, my Roku devices will be discarded,” one user declared.

Another user echoed this sentiment, stating, “I just experienced the same issue. I am now evaluating alternatives to Roku.”

A further comment read, “Yes, this commenced last night for me. It’s quite disappointing and intrusive. While it’s unlikely to make me abandon Roku entirely, given my existing investment in three streaming sticks and two Roku televisions, I will certainly refrain from purchasing any Roku products in the future.”

Reports indicate the advertisements were consistently promoting the recent film “Moana 2.”

One disgruntled user expressed, “Just encountered an advertisement for Moana. This is completely unacceptable. If I am forced to endure an ad simply to access my applications and watch television, I will discontinue using Roku.”

Another user shared, “Affirmative. Moana 2 for me as well. I have long been a proponent of Roku, but this marks the end of that. I may continue using my current devices, but I will no longer recommend them to others.”

“A Moana advertisement appeared the moment I switched on my television!” another commenter confirmed.

The Post contacted Roku representatives for their response to these user complaints.

Roku Explains Ad Rollout as “Test”

In an official statement, a Roku spokesperson acknowledged that these advertisements were part of a new testing phase. They indicated that user feedback would be considered in future decisions regarding this feature, suggesting a potential reconsideration.

“Our recent test is simply the latest illustration of our ongoing efforts to discover novel methods for showcasing brands and programming while upholding a delightful and user-friendly experience,” the technology company stated.

Past Customer Concerns

This incident is not the first instance of customer dissatisfaction with Roku. In 2024, the company faced two cyberattacks that compromised over 500,000 user accounts. Roku assured users that sensitive personal data remained secure during these security breaches.
