Le Tissier Suggests Lineker Secrets Will Emerge Posthumously
Former footballer Matt Le Tissier has implied that secrets surrounding Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker will surface after his death. Le Tissier, aged 56, who was dismissed from Sky Sports in August 2020, made the enigmatic statement on the Disruptors podcast with host Rob Moore.
The ex-Southampton striker stated: “We’ll probably discover all these things after Gary dies.” When questioned if he meant to suggest “skeletons in the closet,” he elaborated.

“Oh, I can assure you that Gary Lineker is not as virtuous as he presents himself. Just ask Joey Barton! Examine Joey Barton’s social media feed where he criticizes Gary Lineker and challenges him to respond. And Gary refrains from engaging because he is aware he is not entirely innocent,” he asserted.
History of Public Spats Between Football Personalities
This is not the first instance of Le Tissier publicly criticizing Lineker. The two have previously clashed on social media platforms.
Social Media Exchanges and Political Differences
In one prior exchange, Le Tissier contended that the government’s reaction to Covid-19 differed from its approach to influenza, to which Lineker retorted: “Yeah Matt, why didn’t someone invent a flu vaccine?”
During an appearance on the Pub Talk YouTube show in 2022, Le Tissier commented: “Gary was one of those verified users who would jump on anything I said.”
He added, “But you know, Gary is a very unique individual; he is perpetually blameless.”
Political Spectrum and Differing Viewpoints
“[Our dispute was about] opinions. He is firmly on the left of the political spectrum, and I am more centrally aligned, perhaps leaning slightly to the right, although I concur with certain leftist viewpoints,” Le Tissier explained.
Lineker’s Impending Match of the Day Departure
Le Tissier’s remarks are made as Lineker prepares to leave Match of the Day after a 25-year tenure as the primary host.
Lineker has anchored the BBC’s premier football program since 1999 and is scheduled to depart in May 2025. Gabby Logan, Kelly Cates, and Mark Chapman are slated to succeed him.
However, he will continue to be involved with the Match Of the Day Top Ten podcast, as well as his personal podcast, which features BBC analysts Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.
