Islanders hoping history can repeat itself again with another late playoff push

Islanders Display Familiar Resilience in Playoff Pursuit

The New York Islanders are once again demonstrating a pattern of late-season surges, a trend increasingly familiar to observers of the team.

Two seasons prior, despite losing Mat Barzal to injury, the Islanders rallied with a 14-7-2 record. This impressive stretch culminated in a decisive Game 82 victory, securing their place in the playoffs.

Last season mirrored this tenacity, as the team posted a 10-2-1 record to close out the regular season, remaining undefeated in regulation throughout April. This surge propelled them into the postseason, overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds after a six-game losing streak in March had diminished their playoff hopes.

Navigating Setbacks, Maintaining Playoff Hopes

This year presents a similar narrative. Despite trading Brock Nelson ahead of the trade deadline – a move that suggested a recalibration of priorities beyond immediate playoff contention given their 13th place standing in the Eastern Conference at the time – the Islanders find themselves back in the thick of the playoff race.

Having last held a playoff position in the standings on November 19th, their postseason aspirations appeared tenuous at best just weeks ago.

Yet, the Islanders are defying expectations.

Pelech Highlights Team’s Resemblance to Past Comebacks

“It feels very similar,” Adam Pelech remarked to The Post on Tuesday night. His comments came from a jubilant locker room following the Islanders’ dramatic comeback victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Overcoming a two-goal deficit in the final period, the Islanders secured a 4-2 win, narrowing the gap to just three points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the final playoff spot.

This victory marked the Islanders’ second consecutive game erasing a multi-goal deficit – a feat unprecedented in regulation in team history, according to statistician Eric Hornick.

The Islanders now face a pivotal home game against the Canadiens on Thursday, a contest that carries significant weight for their season’s trajectory.

Suddenly, a tangible playoff opportunity has re-emerged.

Dobson Emphasizes Veteran Experience and Focus

“Every season is unique, but we’ve encountered ourselves in similar situations in recent years,” Noah Dobson stated. “We have a veteran group in this locker room, and we understand it won’t always be aesthetically pleasing. We just need to find ways to compete and persevere. We’re taking it one game at a time. This is two consecutive wins; we aim to build on this momentum and prepare for a critical game on Thursday.”

With 15 games remaining in the regular season, the Islanders have ample time to solidify their playoff contention in what remains an unpredictable Eastern Conference race.

While four weeks until the regular-season finale against Columbus may seem brief, it represents a significant stretch of games in the context of the playoff chase.

Experience as a Differentiator

The Islanders possess a distinct advantage over their rivals in this playoff push: considerable experience navigating these high-pressure scenarios.

Unlike teams such as the Rangers and Bruins, the Islanders are accustomed to fiercely competing for a lower playoff seed.

In contrast to Montreal, Columbus, and Detroit, the Islanders have a proven track record in these late-season battles, having emerged victorious in the past.

This experience has proven valuable, evident in their recent wins against Florida and Pittsburgh.

Resilience and Mindset Fuel Comeback Wins

“Kind of the same message,” Dobson explained, reflecting on their recent comebacks. “We weren’t playing poorly but found ourselves down two goals. We responded immediately in the third period, with a significant goal by [Kyle Palmieri], and subsequently controlled the entire period. We value our resilience and our mindset entering the third period.”

Despite the absence of the injured Barzal and the trade of Nelson to Colorado, the Islanders are not the most statistically favored team in this playoff race. However, this was arguably true in previous seasons as well.

Yet, when the Islanders express their unwavering belief, it carries weight and rings true.

Team Embraces Playoff Chase Mentality

The Islanders have demonstrated a capacity to manage the psychological demands of a fluctuating playoff pursuit and recover from inevitable setbacks.

While their overall season performance may be characterized as mediocre, the Islanders appear to thrive under pressure and in these critical late-season contests.

Pelech Affirms Confidence for Final Stretch

“We have significant confidence in our team,” Pelech concluded. “We know we have achieved this before, which undoubtedly boosts our confidence as we approach the final stretch of the season.”
