Rod Stewart’s Heartbreak Inspired Touching Song About Penny Lancaster
Sir Rod Stewart, 78, and Penny Lancaster, 52, have maintained a relationship for almost 20 years. However, a brief separation, lasting two weeks, left the “Maggie May” singer heartbroken and served as inspiration for a deeply felt song. The rock icon revealed that Penny ended their relationship early in their romance, before they married.
The Separation and the Song’s Genesis
During their short time apart, Rod found himself fixated on a photograph of Penny, which he viewed each morning and night. This prompted him to create a moving song. Eventually, the couple reconciled, and the “Sailing” artist decided to convey his experience through a song included on his album, “Time.” Discussing the cover in 2013, Rod stated: “I cover Tom Waits’ Picture In A Frame.”
“Penny and I broke up for two weeks and the song is about that time. I asked her for a photo of herself in a frame so that I could see her when I went to bed and when I woke up.”
He also admitted to having “taken numerous risks” in matters of the heart but learned that women value honesty and dislike smoking and gambling.
Wisdom on Love and Marriage
In an interview with the Australian magazine, Life, Rod shared some insights he gained about marriage.
“My relationship rule is, ‘Don’t argue after a glass of wine leave debating until the morning,'” he advised.
“I have always loved women, won some, lost some, but it’s not about the magic touch, it’s about being a better person and a good listener.”
The celebrated Sir Rod has again endeared himself to his fans with a heartfelt disclosure about his wife, Penny Lancaster: “I met Penny in my 50s and if I had not learnt by that point in my life I was never going to.”
Beginnings of Their Romance
Love between the rock legend and the skilled photographer began in the late 1990s during a professional interaction, where Lancaster photographed Rod on one of his electric tours.
Their romance flourished, leading to their marriage in 2007, with the couple demonstrating their enduring connection ever since. Marking a decade of marriage, Rod and Penny celebrated by renewing their vows in 2017.
