LIMA, Peru – Peru’s president announced a state of emergency in the capital city on Monday, ordering military deployment to support police efforts in addressing a surge of violence. This action follows widespread public concern spurred by the recent killing of a prominent musician.
Restrictions Implemented
President Dina Boluarte’s administration issued a decree, specifying a 30-day state of emergency. The declaration will result in several restrictions, including limitations on freedom of assembly and movement. Consequently, law enforcement, including both police and the military, will have the authority to detain individuals without a judicial warrant.
Spike in Violence
Peru has witnessed a concerning escalation of violence in recent months, encompassing a rise in homicides, violent extortion, and attacks on public spaces.

- January alone saw 1,909 extortion reports.
