Rangers transfer news: Steven Gerrard eyeing up Bolton defender Mark Beevers – EXCLUSIVE

The Light Blues sent a scout down south to watch the 28-year-old centre-half in action during last weekend’s friendly against Girona, which finished goalless.

Beevers is in the final year of his contract and would be a much cheaper option than Millwall defender Jake Cooper, who was the subject of a failed £3million bid from Rangers last week.

Championship club Bolton are aware of the interest in Beevers, who has a wealth of experience after racking up more than 100 appearances for both Sheffield Wednesday and Millwall.

Gers boss Steven Gerrard has bolstered his backline with the signings of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic but remains in the hunt for a left-sided centre-half.

Meanwhile, Rangers chief executive Stewart Robertson has been replaced by Celtic counterpart Peter Lawwell on the SPFL board.

Hearts owner Ann Budge and Hamilton vice-chairman Les Gray have also been replaced by Motherwell’s Alan Burrows and Dundee’s John Nelms.

The SPFL also confirmed that two reserve leagues comprising 27 clubs – a top tier of 18 clubs and a second league of nine – will operate in the coming season.

These will replace the development leagues, in place since 2009.

Rangers have already secured the services of Liverpool winger Ryan Kent on a one-year loan deal.

Kent insisted it was a no-brainer to link up again with Steven Gerrard after loan moves last season to SC Freiburg and Bristol City.

He said: “When the opportunity came around to join a club of this magnitude, it was a bit of a no-brainer.

“They have got a person in charge in Steven Gerrard who has played at the highest level and achieved great things. To learn from him is great, and I already know some of the players here. To have Michael Beale here too, he got the best out of me in Under-23s football at Liverpool.

“It is a really exciting move for me, and I am looking forward to the opportunity.

“I would say I am an exciting player, and I never hold back.

“I don’t fear getting on the ball, even if I’ve lost the ball.

“I am hopefully going to bring a lot of excitement to the fans here at Rangers.

“On a personal level, I would like to get a lot of game time this year.

“I think I have to prove a lot of people wrong from last season, and it is a chance to add numbers to my game – so to get a lot of assists and goals. I want to get back to enjoying my football again.”
