Liverpool transfer news: Jurgen Klopp backtracks on ‘bulls**t’ Man Utd claim

The Reds chief was caught up in a storm when asked about Jose Mourinho’s then world-record move for Paul Pogba back in 2016.

The Reds Devils spent £89.3m to bring the Frenchman back to Old Trafford, causing Klopp to say: “The day this is football, I’m not in a job anymore.

“I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money.”

But with the recent acquisitions of Alisson, Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho and Naby Keita, Liverpool’s transfer total sits at well over £150m so far this summer.

Klopp was pressed on the subject during his pre-Dortmund press conference in America this evening.

But the German now admits he does not care what the world thinks of his big-money moves, just as United didn’t care when they signed Pogba two years ago.

“That’s a problem, whatever bulls*** you say, no one will forget it,” he told reporters.

“I couldn’t have imagined the world could have changed.

“£100m was a crazy number but since then the world changed. We signed the most expensive goalkeeper, bam bam, there will be a few nice transfers (from others).

“It’s not about pushing through my thoughts on that and not paying big money, if Liverpool aren’t successful we have to work.

“To improve a squad like this costs money.

“We don’t care what the world think, like Manchester United didn’t care what I thought.

“Did I change my opinion? Yes.

“It’s better to change your opinion than not have one at all.”

As mentioned, Liverpool have strengthened their side with four high-profile arrivals so far this summer.

“So far it’s a really good year for us, pretty successful last year, still we need to replace players – Emre Can left, good business bringing Fabinho in,” Klopp added.

“Shaqiri, we saw him play in the World Cup, I know Stoke were relegated but he had a lot of good games.”
