CCTV footage shows the tram start to roll away and the woman driver trying to stop it by standing in front of the vehicle and attempting to hold it back with her hands.
The woman had no chance of stopping the heavy tram, or even slowing it down, and it soon started to gather speed as the passengers inside started to panic.
She tried to chase after the tram in a last ditch effort to jump on board to control the runaway vehicle but was unable to catch it.
Witnesses reported that the tram hurtled through the city’s Lenin Boulevard with onlookers chasing after it.
One, named only as Irina, said: “I saw the driver and other people following the tram from the tram station.

The out-of-control tram finally stopped when it rammed into another tram, injuring two people, a 50-year-old male passenger and a female conductor.
The passenger suffered a head injury while the conductor hurt her arm.
Police and local officials are investigating the incident and the video footage is proving popular with viewers online.
