Mauricio Pochettino admits 'too many things' wrong with Chelsea and takes aim at players

Mauricio Pochettino admitted that his Chelsea players have ‘too many things’ to improve on after the Blues were beaten 2-1 by Wolves in yet another lacklustre showing. Goals from Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty secured all three points for the hosts, with a late strike from Chelsea debutant Christopher Nkunku failing to inspire a late comeback at Molineux.

The result marked Chelsea’s eighth defeat of the Premier League campaign, with the Blues stuck firmly in mid-table despite spending hundreds of millions of pounds on signings over the last few years. Pochettino struggled to hide his frustrations after the full-time whistle as he slammed the performance of his players, but was quick to insist that things will improve if his ‘young team’ is given more time.

“We spoke a lot earlier in the season, it’s a group of players and we are a young team,” said the Chelsea boss on Sky Sports. “That doesn’t mean we are young in age but we are a young team. Some are playing in the Premier League for the first time and they need a moment to adapt.

“It is about confidence and quality, too many things. We should score if we want to win games. We feel very disappointed. I am disappointed also because in the first five minutes of the second half we conceded too many corners.

“We have to keep going and pushing, young teams learn from this sort of game. It was difficult because of the space. It made the task more difficult but we need to keep going because we are in a position which Chelsea shouldn’t be in.”

Chelsea managed to create several chances against Wolves but found themselves unable to convert until Nkunku headed home a late consolation in the final minutes. Raheem Sterling failed to open the scoring in the first half after choosing to shoot rather than squaring the ball for a simple tap-in, while Nicolas Jackson also wasted a number of opportunities to get the Blues up and running.

“We feel very disappointed because I think we deserved much more,” added Pochettino. “This competition wounds you when you are not clinical enough. We created chances, that is why it is so disappointing. We conceded after a few corners and it was really difficult.”

Chelsea have now lost four straight away league games for the first time in 23 years, with their previous run of five successive defeats on the road coming when Claudio Ranieri was in charge. They have also lost more league matches than any other Premier League team in 2023, with only Almeria, Werder Bremen and Empoli tasting defeat more often than the Blues across Europe’s top five leagues.
