Kate Garraway flooded with support as poignant performance airs after Derek's heart attack

Kate Garraway joined her Good Morning Britain co-stars Charlotte Hawkins, Laura Tobin, Alex Beresford and Dr Amir Khan, on stage for this year’s Britain Get Singing. In an emotional performance, which was filmed before her husband Derek Draper’s heart attack, the presenters sang East 17’s Stay Another Day.

The song was dedicated to Alex’s close friend, Martin, who sadly took his own life. Alex said tearfully in the pre-recorded episode: “You just wish you had one more day in case you could have said something to make them change their mind.”

When the performance aired on Christmas Eve, legions of fans took to social media to send their best wishes to Kate as Derek remains in hospital.

Sue said: “@GMB loyal supporters are with @kategarraway at the moment so to see her smile tonight was lovely.”

Another wrote: “@Kategarraway I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you and Derek tonight. Always have hope and I’ll include you in my prayers tonight.”

And Andrew typed: “@kategarraway was thinking of you there as I sit by my mum’s bedside hoping for a miracle, the same miracle you are hoping for. Sad times…you both are in my thoughts and prayers.”

The Good Morning Britain presenter is thought to be spending as much time as possible by Derek’s hospital bed over the Christmas period.

The former political lobbyist was admitted to hospital in a “very serious condition” last week following a heart attack.

It is the latest in a string of health woes since he contracted Covid during the pandemic, leaving him with extensive damage to his organs and needing daily care.

Kate’s co-stars Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins informed GMB viewers about the worrying news during last Monday’s episode. Richard said: “We just want to let Derek, Kate and of course the whole family know we are all here thinking of them, and we know many of you are as well, and that all of us send them our very, very best wishes at what is a very, very difficult time.”

Charlotte added: “It is indeed. Lots of love from all of us.”

Kate and Derek have been married since 2005 and share two children: Darcey, 17, and Billy, 14.
