Italian election results: Luigi Di Maio opens doors to anti-EU coalition after huge result

The leader of the populist party Five Star Movement exceeded all expectations in the results making his party the largest in Italy by a wide margin.

Speaking at his party’s latest press conference, Mr Di Maio said he would be open to a dialogue with all political forces to form Italy’s next legislation, opening the doors to his counterpart Matteo Salvini, leader of the League party.

He said: “We have the historical chance to finally come up with solutions to Italy’s main problems.

“We have the great historical chance to deliver on what Italians have been waiting on for the last 30 years.

“And this is why I want to be really clear about this: we are open to a dialogue with all political forces starting from the identification of the figures who will cover the two presidencies of the two houses of parliament.

“But mainly from the identification of the themes that will form the political programme of the 18th Italian legislature.

“I am hopeful because I am sure the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, will know how to guide us at this moment.”

Finance expert Marco Elser claimed a coalition between the two populist parties would create a “big bomb” for Italy’s markets.

Speaking on Bloomberg News, Mr Elser said: “A crazy coalition would probably be Movimento Cinque Stelle with Forza Italia or with Lega.”

He warned that a coalition between Five Star Movement and the League party would be like “putting two molecules of hydrogen and one of oxygen” and creating a “big bomb”.

Mr Elser added: “That would. It’s not going to happen.”

The finance expert said a coalition between the two populist parties is like a chicken pen with two roosters, suggesting it is unlikely that Matteo Salvini will not give up at the chance to become Prime Minister.

Mr Salvini has ruled out a coalition with Five Star Movement, claiming the only way for him to respect his electorate would be to run the country within the centre-right coalition formed before the election with Forza Italia and Fratelli d’Italia.

None of the pre-election coalitions nor the individual parties reached the 40 percent majority needed
