According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Department, deputies went to a property in the 7000 block of Sunfair Road in Joshua Tree around 11am Wednesday morning for an area check.
During the check, they found an abandoned travel trailer and a large, rectangular plywood box.
The so-called residence had no electricity or running water as well as mounds of trash and human feces throughout the property.
Roughly 30-40 cats were also found roaming freely around the trailer.
During the investigation, deputies discovered three children – aged 11, 13, and 14 – living in the plywood box.

The box measured about 20 feet long by 4 feet high and 10 feet wide.
The children, who were found to have an inadequate amount of food, told investigators they had been living in the box for around four years.
Children and Family Service responded to the discovery and immediately took custody of the three victims.
Maron Kirk and Daniel Panico, who investigators determined to be the parents of the children, were arrested and booked into the Morongo Basin Jail on suspicion of wilful cruelty to a child.
They are being held in lieu of $100,000 (£72,568) bail.
