Tiger Woods explains secret tactic to get him ready for Masters return

Woods was sharing eighth place and just a handful of shots from the lead before letting slip what could have been a first top-10 since the 2015 Wydnham Championship in taking a double-bogey at the 15th hole and then posting bogey at 16 before eventually signing for a level par 70 to remain at level par for the event on the PGA National course.

“Overall, I am very pleased with the progress I’ve made,” he said.

“I gave myself a chance at it. I was three-under par with four holes to go and thought to myself I could probably be two or three more under coming in and post an early number.

“I am going to get back into the gym again and train. I’ve played a couple of weeks now so I want to get stronger again and get back at it.

“And I just need to keep it feeling good, so that is why I want to get back to the gym and keep my body strong but I made a big leap this week as I really hit it well, and was able to control my golf ball in this wind that was not easy to do for most of the week.”

The 14-time Major winner was asked if he could single out what made him particularly proud at the end of what is only his third PGA Tour event since his 10th place result at the Wyndham.

“I am very positive about my four days as I really hit the ball well and when I missed, I missed in the correct spots,” he said.

“I had control of my golf ball and it is something I am very proud of.

“Every time I have come out to tournaments I am getting back the feel for my rounds. I have been away from tournament golf for so long that I am now starting to feel the rounds. I am feeling the pace and getting more of a better sense of it and the more I play tournament golf, the better I will get out it.”

And just prior to Woods heading to the PGA National car park and jump in his car for the 20-minute drive to his palatial Jupiter Island abode, he was quizzed on the importance of possibly contesting one more event ahead of teeing-up on 5th April at Augusta National.

“I need to keep playing tournament golf, but I need to keep building on it, keep building my body, keep building towards April,” he said.

“That was the goal when I first came back. I told you guys at Torrey, try and get everything situated for April and I feel like I’m right on track for that. As I said, I didn’t really know what to expect for the year.

“I had not gone through this before. This is all new. I had to make some pretty big changes in my swing and my feels. My feels are different through the golf ball. And that’s something that it’s a reality.

“My new reality, my back’s fused and I can’t create the same shots I used to be able to create. I can hit the same shots but I just have to do it in a different way.”

And while Woods would not commit himself to a fourth event of 2018 many observers believe he will enter the March 15th commencing Arnold Palmer Invitational in suburban Orlando and an event he’s won eight times including four in succession starting from a first triumph in 2000.

For the purists, Woods managed 13 birdies over the four Honda Classic rounds along with seven bogeys and three double-bogeys.

Woods hit 33 of 56 PGA National fairways, 48 of 72 greens in regulation and was ranked third overall in driving distance while he averaged 28 putts per round.

Not bad in just his third event of a new season.
