Sophie Winkleman opens up on ITV's Sanditon role as 'fragile' King's mistress

Sophie Winkleman touched on her role as Lady Susan and admitted that despite playing a “powerful” character, there were some very “fragile” points to her.

Sophie’s character Lady Susan first appeared at the end of season one and is back with a storm, with her position as the King’s mistress affording her immense power but little security.

The ITV star recently opened up on the development of her character and how her new title comes with some consequences.

Sophie explained: “She’s the King’s mistress, which makes her very powerful and very sucked up to.

“But it’s also a very fragile position because if the King looks at another woman to be his flavour of the month, she’s completely dropped.

“So she’s much more fragile than we realise she was in the first series.”

Her new storyline will see her play matchmaker for Charlotte Heywood (played by Rose Williams) and Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes).

Samuel Colbourne (Liam Garrigan) is in the midst of a love triangle with Charlotte and Alexander but sees Lady Susan start to fall in love with him as well.

“The chemistry starts to expand and they are very drawn to each other. I think he seems like a far better bet than the capricious King so I hope their story leads to a lovely ending,” she revealed.

In real life, Sophie is no stranger to high society, strict rules and extravagant dresses as she is married to the Royal family’s Lord Frederick Windsor.

Despite her life inside the Royal family, Sophie admitted that she was grateful the team had a historical advisor.

“I can’t underestimate how helpful they are if you want to know how Ladies would eat, when they would put down their knife and fork,” she stated.

“How they would accept a glass, whether they’d speak to staff or not, or how they would hold their fan in certain situations.

“It is so essential to create a really authentic period piece to have one of these advisors on set.”

Sanditon returns on Thursday 17th August on ITVX.
