Zelensky vows to purge corrupt officials and those helping Russia

Ukraine’s president has pledged to purge corrupt officials and those found to be helping Russia.

Volodymyr Zelensky spoke after the arrest of a military recruitment figure accused of mass embezzlement and an MP said to be collaborating with the invader.

The anti-corruption push is seen as key in gaining European Union and Nato membership.

Mr Zelensky pledged to audit military draft offices, telling TV viewers that ordinary Ukrainians who support the war effort were enraged by corrupt practices.

He said: “No one will forgive members of parliament, judges, military officials or any other officials for placing themselves in opposition to the state.”

And Mr Zelensky said he would no longer tolerate parliamentarians who “because of some sort of personal gain” refuse to back laws to help secure EU membership.

Earlier, Yevhen Borysov, head of the military recruitment office in the southern city of Odesa, was alleged to have been found with unexplained funds amounting to £4million.

Local media said his family had bought property in Spain.

And officials said parliamentarian Oleksandr Ponomaryov had been arrested on suspicion of treason. He was refused bail.

The lawmaker is suspected of collaborating with Russia in the occupied south-east.

Ponomaryov was elected for a now-banned party accused of Kremlin ties. He has denied collaborating with Moscow in the past.

The US has announced a £312million arms package for Ukraine. For the first time it is giving state-of-the-art Black Hornet ‘spy drones’.

The Pentagon is also sending air defence missiles, Himars rockets plus Stryker armoured vehicles as the counteroffensive against Russia grinds on in the east
