'Huge chaos' in Ukraine with people screaming underneath rubble after bombing onslaught

A Russian missile strike at a restaurant and shopping area in the centre of a Ukrainian city has killed at least three, including a teenager, and injured dozens. The attack on Tuesday (27 June) took place in central Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine. Belgian freelance journalist Arnaud De Becker told BBC he was at the popular Ria Lounge restaurant only minutes before it was hit. He says there are likely still people under the rubble because it’s a large restaurant.

A shocking video has emerged through local media showing the aftermath of the Russian missiles. The video shows the streets littered with debris and an injured man lying on the floor covered in blood before showing a baby with deep cuts being tended to.

De Becker says he saw “dead people, people screaming, people crying, huge chaos” and estimates up to 80 people were in the restaurant when it was struck.

He says he heard screaming coming from beneath the rubble at the restaurant as rescuers tried to save somebody.

Regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko told Ukrainian TV: “Just half an hour ago, two missiles struck the city of Kramatorsk.

“This is the city centre. These were public eating places crowded with civilians.”

Responding to the attack, President Zelensky said: “Exactly on the anniversary of the Russian terrorists’ attack on Kremenchuk, on the shopping mall, when 22 people were killed, Russian savages again fired missiles at the Kremenchuk district.

“Today, Russian terrorists also brutally shelled Kramatorsk. S-300 missiles. Unfortunately, there are killed and wounded. Assistance is being provided. The rubble is being cleared.

“Each such manifestation of terror proves over and over again to us and to the whole world that Russia deserves only one thing as a result of everything it has done – defeat and a tribunal, fair and legal trials against all Russian murderers and terrorists.

“And I thank again and again everyone in the world who supports Ukraine and helps protect our people!”
