Mail Sport broke the news of chief executive Michael Nicholson and finance director Chris McKay flying by private jet to Mallorca for face-to-face talks with the club’s No1 managerial target on Saturday.

Further to those discussions, Rodgers has also held a number of in-depth conversations with major shareholder Dermot Desmond to thrash out his conditions for a second stint in Glasgow.

Key to the 50-year-old agreeing to a return is an undertaking by Celtic’s board of directors that they will invest in the players and infrastructure necessary to drive the club forward in Europe.

Frustrated by the glass ceiling on transfer spending during his first spell in charge, Rodgers wants to see the football operation reshaped and is now speaking to potential members of his backroom team.

Attempts to persuade assistant manager John Kennedy to stay put in Glasgow are under way.

Ange Postecoglou, who left Celtic to sign a four-year deal at Tottenham Hotspur, wants the Parkhead No 2 to join him in North London. Kennedy is currently considering his options.

After leaving Leicester in April, Rodgers intended to take time out of the game but has since been made several offers to make a quick return.

Recently relegated from the Premier League, Leeds United were keen to open negotiations, with other clubs also interested.

A return to Celtic, where he won each of the seven trophies available to him from 2016, holds greater appeal.

Rodgers is also thought to be motivated by a desire to mend his relationship with those supporters who turned on him after his sudden exit four years back.

Reluctant to place all their eggs in one basket, Celtic have considered a range of candidates and spoken to some via Zoom.

Bodo/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen has been mentioned in dispatches after talks with Ajax broke down. Enzo Maresca, one of Pep Guardiola’s trusted assistants at Manchester City, will speak with the newly crowned European champions about his future this week.

The 43-year-old is understood to have already talked to Leicester about their vacancy and his preference is to remain working in English football.

Former Norwich manager Daniel Farke and little-known Italian Francesco Farioli have also spoken with Celtic.
