North Korea news: K-Pop star sings unification songs at Olympics as minders watch athletes

The 26-year-old Girl’s Generation sensation joined the North Korean classical music ensemble during a performance at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul.

She appeared on stage to sing “Let’s Meet Again” and “Our Wish” two songs that represent a desire for the unification of the two Korean countries.

The singers were given a standing ovation from the audience and Seohyun was seen embracing the North Korean singers and musicians at the end of the performance which came after a last-minute request from the Seoul’s presidential Blue House on the day of the concert.

A spokeswoman for Seohyun, who is massively popular in South Korea, said: “It’s not something she prepared for in advance, but she joined the performance after she received the sudden request.

“The Blue House requested her appearance, without saying much else other than, ‘We really hope you would attend.’

“They requested two songs. Seohyun learned one of the songs the day of and performed.

“As it was a sudden decision, Seohyun did not even have time to rehearse.”

Kwon Hyuk Ki, director of the Blue House’s press centre and deputy chief of the government’s joint assistance team for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics also explained why Seohyun was approached to take part in the concert.

He said: “All the vocalists for the North Korean performance were females, and we didn’t have enough time to arrange the song for a male singer to perform.

“As the audience had many elderly guests, we looked for a singer with great popularity.

“While we were searching for a singer who could practice in the short amount of time, Seohyun’s side gladly accepted our request, which is how she came to perform.”

“At first, the North Korean singers opposed the joint performance due to the short practice period, but we were able to persuade them and put on the joint performance.”

K-pop is helping North Korean members of the united Korean women’s ice hockey team are bonding with their team-mates from the South.

Before the team, the first inter-Korean side to compete at an Olympics, took to the ice at the Pyeongchang winter Games against Sweden, they used a K-pop tune to settle their nerves.

Their Canadian coach Sarah Murray said: “They were in the locker room singing and dancing.

“I think our players were teaching them how to K-pop dance.”

The two Koreas are using the Games as a way of easing tensions but defection is an unspoken fear with both sides keen to avoid any incident that could ruin the thawing relations.

Each night, players from the North sleep in a different building inside the Olympic athletes’ village and even though the team eats dinner together and has gone to the seaside for coffee, the North Korean athletes every move is being watched by government minders.
