Man fined for posting photo of himself as Jesus pays penalty with crowdfunding in an hour

Daniel Serrano, 24, had uploaded the picture of himself as Jesus, complete with nose piercing, to his social media accounts.

A religious brotherhood asked him to take the picture down, and when he refused, they took the case to court in Jaen, Andalusia, Spain.

Serrano pleaded guilty to a crime against religious sentiment, and was forced to pay the €480 (£412) fine.

The public prosecution service had asked for a fine of €2,160 (£1,853) or a sentence of 180 days in prison to be given to Serrano.

The co-ordinator of political party Podemos in Andalusia, Teresa Rodriguez, confirmed in a post on social media that Serrano had raised the cash for the fine in under an hour through online crowdfunding.

Rodriguez had criticised the fine given to Serrano, describing it as “a gagging law.”

She said: “We see how tweeters and rappers come accused by prosecutors and condemned by the judiciary for expressing their ideas, in different formats.”

The image the boy put his face on is known as Jesus Despojado – Stripped Jesus – and belongs to a local religious brotherhood.

Prosecutors had said the photo was a “shameful manipulation of the face of the image” which showed “overt contempt and mockery for the religious brotherhood with the purpose of offending.”
