Donald Trump 'has skin of an armadillo' as he's tipped for 'brazen' CNN showdown

Donald Trump will show he has “the skin of an armadillo” as he is tipped to make a “brazen” appearance on broadcaster CNN, barely hours after a jury in a civil case found he sexually abused a woman.

The former US President, who served in the White House between 2016 and 2020, has angrily hit out at the result of the New York case.

The 76-year-old was found to have sexually abused and defamed E Jean Carroll, though the civil trial rejected the claim he raped her during the encounter during the Nineties.

As a result, Trump was told to pay $5million in damages to the former Elle magazine columnist, and lashed out furiously online after the ruling was made.

And Trump will take part in a town hall session with CNN tonight, with participants set to grill his proposal to become the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential race.

And for Mike Tappin, a US politics expert and honorary fellow at Keele University, the fallout from the case could damage his legacy.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, the author said: “What is interesting is that none of his major opponents to date have made any comment about this verdict.

“His lawyer has already said there is going to be an appeal, so this may well run and run.

“It will be interesting to see the way in which Trump responds tonight on CNN where for the first time in many years, he’s going to appear in a Town Hall type meeting, taking questions from Republicans and other voters.”

While Mr Tapping noted that there would “obviously be questions” about his private life and behaviour, they would not impact Trump’s desire for a second term as President.

He added: “Trump has the skin of an armadillo, and I think he will try to brazen it out.”

In the aftermath of the verdict being delivered, Trump issued a furious rebuttal of the court’s decision, lashing out on his Truth Social site at the “continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time”.

After the verdict was delivered, Ms Carroll said the reason behind her decision to take Trump to court was in order to “get my life back”, saying the “world finally knows the truth”.

She added: “This victory is not just for me but for every woman who has suffered because she was not believed.”

The CNN broadcast will be hosted by anchor Kaitlan Collins. It is set to begin at 8pm ET (1am GMT) from St Anselm College, New Hampshire.

Trump said that the CNN event “could turn into a disaster for all, including me”, adding in a post: “They made me a deal I couldn’t refuse!!!”
