Man City star Raheem Sterling makes stunning confession about his goalscoring record

The England winger contrived arguably the worst miss of the Premier League season when he sent a simple tap-in wide of an open goal from two yards out in Manchester City’s 1-1 draw at Burnley – just days after he had squandered an easy opportunity against West Brom.

The England winger threw himself to the ground at Turf Moor in agonised disbelief at the miss and was hauled off by Pep Guardiola moments later.

Sterling says he is trying to match the clinical efficiency of City’s record goalscorer Sergio Aguero.

“I’ve missed so many chances,” he said. “I try to improve on it every day. I want to get better and help win crucial matches.

“If I miss a chance, don’t speak to me. I’m a bit too harsh on myself, that’s how I am and that’s how I always will be – in order to get better.

“Sergio said ‘you need to catch up with me’. I said ‘I can’t – you’re Sergio Aguero!’ He’s a player I look up to. In crucial moments of games he does what I want to be doing.”

Guardiola claims Sterling would be a world class player if his final product was better and the former Liverpool player has vowed to keep working on his weaknesses.

“I’m not the complete player but I’m learning,” he said. “Pep’s helping with the basics, helping me to become more ruthless. That’s what I’m trying to do. I’ve been getting in the box much more often this season, following things in and always trying to be around the box to try and sniff out a goal.

“I wouldn’t describe myself as the complete player but a player who is still learning. I’ve got plenty of room to grow. There’s fine things, little details, that I need to sharpen up on. It’s something that I’m learning every day, that I’m trying to improve on and I’ll definitely get there.”
