BREAKING: Charlottesville train crash – Critics use shock incident to slam ‘hateful GOP’

Emergency officials raced to the scene to help after the AmTrak train, which was full of GOP officials along with their partners and children, slammed into a dump truck.

Officials have since confirmed one person has died, while another has been injured.

However, before the full extent of the injuries caused by the incident were known, many jumped to criticise the Republican party members caught up in the crash.

One person asked “were any of Trump’s ‘very fine people’ injured?” in an apparent reference to the President’s response to the white nationalist rally in the town in August.

After the rally, in which counter-protestor Heather Heyer was killed after being mowed down by a car, the President said: “you had people that were very fine people on both sides”.

The President and his party faced strong criticism for their response to the rally, which also left 19 people injured.

Taking to Twitter, some described today’s train crash as “poetic justice”, while another added “the symbolism of a train carrying Republican members crashing into a garbage truck in Charlottesville of all places is really really really on the nose.”

One person tweeted: “So… a train full of Republicans on their way to a ‘retreat’ in Charlottesville of ALL places, the day after the mailed in State of the Union? Somewhere in this is some kind of irony…”

The train was carrying Republican lawmakers and staff to a political retreat in West Virginia when it collided with the lorry.

Another person wrote: “I know I’m supposed to send good thoughts and prayers to the GOP congress in the amtrak accident in Charlottesville today, but how ironic is it that the hateful GOP are in an accident there?

“I hope the kids on the train and the truck the driver are ok.”

In a statement, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said: “There are no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff.

“Senior Administration officials are in regular contact with Amtrak and state and local authorities.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been affected by this incident.”

Republican chairman of the House of Commerce Greg Walden shared a shocking photo of the accident.

He tweeted: “We’re fine, but our train hit a garbage truck. Members with medical training are assisting the drivers of the truck.”

Photos taken at the scene show the mangled truck lying in a ditch.

A White House official confirmed the incident to CBS. They said they were not aware of any fatalities.

The crash took place at the corner of Lanetown Road and Marymart Farm Road around 15 miles out of Charlottesville, Virginia.
