Rafael Nadal: Why this is my biggest problem with the ATP Tour

Nadal, who kicked off his Australian Open campaign with a straight-sets win against Victor Estrella Burgos, takes on Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer in the second round this morning.

After pulling out of the ATP World Tour finals last year with a knee injury, there were concerns about Nadal’s fitness going into the 2018 campaign.

Despite winning 16 Grand Slam titles during his illustrious career, the Spaniard has been beset by injury problems in recent years.

Nadal’s rival Novak Djokovic has only just returned to the tour after spending six months on the sidelines recovering from an elbow problem.

Whereas Andy Murray won’t come back until the summer earliest after undergoing a hip operation.

And Nadal thinks the sheer number of injuries in the mens game is a growing problem.

“Another thing is that there are too many injuries on the tour,” Nadal said.

“I am not the one to say, but somebody have to look about what’s going on. Are changes needed? I repeat: I am not the one to take decisions.

“But when something is happening too often, something we are not doing well.

“I am not saying what to do. I am just playing tennis.

“But when something is happening, you need to analyse why.”
