Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes: We have NO money to spend to catch Celtic

McInnes believes Brendan Rodgers’ side would be disappointed if they failed to make history with a second successive treble, such is the gulf between the Hoops and the rest of the pack.

But that won’t stop the Dons manager trying to guide his team to their second Scottish Cup Final in a row and pushing table-topping Celtic as hard as possible between now and May.

Yet contrary to the public view that the Dons – backed by property tycoon Stewart Milne and multi-millionaire major shareholder Dave Cormack – have funds to spend on transfer fees, the reality is McInnes will be wheeling and dealing.

Pittodrie chiefs have invested time and money in a proposed new stadium and training facility, and the manager knows his transfer limitations as he bids to close the gap on Celtic.

So far this month Aberdeen have secured a loan move for Manchester City’s Nigerian midfielder Chidi Nwakali after freeing up wages by letting Greg Tansey move to Ross County.

McInnes said: “There seems to be this thought that there’s money to spend, but there isn’t. We reinvested the money we got for Jonny Hayes and Jayden Stockley. We got £100,000 for Stockley and good money for Jonny and tried to reinvest that back into the team by being able to re-sign players and bring players to the club.

“But there’s no money to spend. I’ve never really had money to spend, so I’ll try to be as creative as I can.

“Celtic are so far ahead resources-wise that I think it would be seen as a disappointing campaign if they didn’t win a treble.

“They should be favourites in every domestic competition. It’s up to the rest to find a way to stop that and get our own clubs winning something.”

Aberdeen face a threat from Rangers, Hibs and possibly Hearts as they try to keep pace with Celtic.

And McInnes knows the Dons must continue to punch above their weight.

He said: “Hibs, Hearts and Rangers have some clear advantages over us in terms of facilities and maybe even attendances recently.

“Although we’ve had an upturn in fortunes from our side with attendances in the last few years, it’s about doing a lot of good things right on a daily basis.”
