Liverpool vs Everton: Jurgen Klopp makes shock claim about penalty in FA Cup clash

Liverpool took the lead against Everton in the first half from the penalty spot after Adam Lallana went down under a challenge from Mason Holgate.

Referee Bobby Madley did not hesitate to point to the spot and James Milner duly converted to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.

But Jurgen Klopp has claimed Liverpool were fortunate to win the penalty and said it evened things up for Everton’s in the 1-1 draw in the derby last month.

“It was a similar situation [to the penalty against Liverpool for Everton last month],” Klopp said.

“The first one was no penalty in my opinion and this one wasn’t also. It’s the same.

“There is contact and the referee used his whistle. Exactly the same situation.”

Everton drew level with a fine striker from Gylfi Sigurdsson after the break but Liverpool’s new signing Virgil van Dijk popped up with a winner.

The £75million man headed home five minutes from time to cap off a memorable debut for the Reds.

And the Dutchman was delighted to score and knock Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals out the FA Cup in the process.

“What a night. It was thoroughly deserved, it felt amazing to be out there, the goal is very special for me and my family,” he said.

“Playing at Anfield for Liverpool is a dream for every player.

“To score a goal is even more special.”
