Margot Robbie has received death threats for playing Harley Quinn
The Aussie actress has tackled some controversial roles, including her latest as the disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding.
She has gone full-frontal on screen and faced charging jungle animals. But only one movie has resulted in her receiving “death threats.”

Robbie revealed in a new major in-depth interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that she now has to spend thousands to protect herself, not only from death threats but from stalkers.
It all started with her role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. Many fans were not happy with her casting as the DC villain. Shockingly, most of the criticisms centred on the fact that some felt she was TOO sexy. dubbing her “Whorely Quinn.”
Robbie said: “You’re about to be in a comic book film; now here’s the worst-case scenario of how big and scary it can get.
“There’s just all this stuff you learn along the way, like, when you get those death threats, it’s [smart] to have a security team do a background check on whoever sent them to see if there is any past history of violence because you’ll need to know whether you need security to go to certain events.”

She added: “And every time you do a background check, it’s going to cost $2,000, so take that into consideration when you’re getting yourself into this.”

The actress is also currently playing a hugely controversial celebrity who lived through abusive relationships and was also involved in the brutal attack on another female athlete.
I, Tonya looks set to bring Robbie a raft of award nominations, but she admitted the role had been gruelling.
Tonya Harding was implicated in the terrible battering given to her Olympic rival Nancy Kerrigan in 1994. Her husband, Jeff Gillooly,and her bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt, hired Shane Stant to break Kerrigan’s right leg so that she would be unable to compete at Lillehammer. The case shocked the world and ended Harding’s glittering sporting career.
Although it emerged that Harding had had a difficult childhood and was also in an abusive relationship with Gillooly, she was forever cast as the evil villain in the public imagination.

Robbie acknowledged that she had found it “emotionally traumatic to put [herself] in the mind-set of someone who’s in an abusive relationship.”
She said: “It was a character that definitely scared me. And I couldn’t understand why she was doing and saying the things she was doing and saying, but I wanted to — and any time that happens in a script, that’s a character I really want to play.”
Robbie also confessed she woduld sit in her car and sob after filming for a different reason.

The actress already had some experience in the rink from playing ice hockey in her youth, but was not prepared for how punishing training would be.
Robbie revealed: “Before that point I thought I wasn’t too bad at ice skating – I used to play ice hockey. I soon realised that I’d just been running on ice, and now there was no padding.
“My alarm would go off at 5.30am and I’d want to cry. Sometimes after sessions I’d get back into the car and weep.”
