After being rebuffed in the summer despite considerable interest, Liverpool finally have got the man they believe will shore up their leaky defence.
Liverpool and Southampton had been in negotiations over a deal for Van Dijk and the Reds have agreed to pay £75million for the defender.
It means Liverpool have seen off rivals Manchester City and Chelsea to sign Van Dijk, who has been their top transfer target in 2017.
Victor Lindelof was a big summer signing for Manchester United in the summer but he has struggled at times this season.
And Carragher took the news of Van Dijk’s signing to have a cheeky dig at United.

Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville asked Carragher if Van Dijk was good value and the Kop legend tweeted back: “Not sure, but double the price of Lindelof sounds cheap to me!!”
Earlier Carragher had expressed his delight with Van Dijk’s arrival.
When asked if Van Dijk was better than him, Carragher wrote on Twitter: “Better in the air than me, quicker than me, more composed & doesn’t score own goals!”
