Star Wars actor Alfie Curtis dies: WATCH his famous scene here as Mark Hamill pays tribute

Curtis has died aged 87 this Christmas.

Although he starred in other major movies like The Elephant Man and TV shows including Grange Hill, he will be best remembered for his aggressive and threatening drunk outlaw who menaced Luke Skywalker in A New Hope.

Skywalker himself, aka Mark Hamill, tweeted his sadness at the news. He said: “Alfie Curtis made the Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina scene – one of the most memorable I’ve ever been a part of – even more memorable.”

He growled: “My friend doesn’t like you. I don’t like you, either. You watch yourself, we’re wanted men. I have teh death sentence on twelve systems. You’ll be dead.”

As Luke turned away, Evazan screamed in anger and hurled the young Jedi across the room.

Hamill movingly wrote about how different the actor was from his on-screen character.

He added: “As horrific as he was on-camera, off-camera he was funny, kind and a real gentleman. Thanks Alf – you’ll be missed.”

As well as the worrying thought that jazz is the alien bar music of choice across the galaxy, the famous scene builds the growing sense of menace and danger that is threatening Luke.

Curtis was born in London on July 28, 1930.

He made his TV debut in 1973 in Bowler and had a recurring parts on the Larry Grayson show in 1975 before his 1977 memorable Star Wars cameo.
