Hollywood, naturally, couldn’t resist attempting to bring the People’s Princess back to life on the silver screen.
The movie, simply called ‘Diana’, was an unmitigated disaster and spectacular box office flop that even leading lady Naomi Watts found hard to defend.
Watts said afterwards: “I got seduced by the fantastic character. Diana did a lot of things that had positive and negative results. She was multifaceted. But ultimately there were problems [with the film] and it ended up taking a direction that was not the one I was hoping for.”

Even worse, the movie focussed on the love affair between Dian and London cardiologist Dr Hasnat Khan, who blasted the makers of the film in a passionate denunciation of its “unfounded” portrayal of their relationship.
The 2013 movie was based on Kate Snell’s 2001 book Diana: Her Last Love but Dr Khan rejected any implications that he had helped the author or the film makers with any details about what really happened during the two years they were involved.
He said: “I have never read the book to this day. I really don’t know how she (Snell) got her information because even my very close friends didn’t know what was going on between me and the Princess.”
“It is based on gossip and Diana’s friends talking about a relationship that they didn’t know much about, and some of my relatives who didn’t know much about it either. It is all based on hypotheses and gossip.”
The film received a dreadful reviews aggregate of 8% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed a paltry £21million worldwide.
Director Oliver Hirschbiegel tried to blame the poor box office performance on the UK publics inability to face the truth.
He said: “I think for the British, Diana is still a trauma they haven’t come to terms with.”
