Star Wars 8: Carrie Fisher wrote THESE lines HERSELF in The Last Jedi

Warning: spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The actress passed away shortly after completing work on the new movie, which was released in UK cinemas last Thursday.

Among her most emotionally-charged moments were a farewell with Laura Dern’s Vice Admiral Holdo and a gut-wrenchingly beautiful scene with Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, with whom she starred in the original trilogy.

Rian Johnson, the film’s writer and director, told The Daily Beast: “[Carrie] loved one-liners and jokes. She could just pop out so many jokes.

“So the whole thing where she sits down with Luke and [says], ‘I changed my hair,’ obviously, that was her.”

And the moment when she and Holdo both attempt to say “may the Force be with you” at the same time was also, it seems, down to her – and indeed Dern.

“That whole Holdo scene, that goodbye scene was actually completely rewritten with Carrie and with Laura,” Johnson recalled.

“The three of us got together and worked through it.”

He added: “The real heart of that scene came from Laura. It was her saying, ‘I just feel like, from my character to Leia, but also me to Carrie, I want to express what she means to me. I want to express my gratitude.’”

The Last Jedi has made a huge impact at the box office, and received an A grade from audiences at CinemaScore.

Praise hasn’t been unanimous, though, with the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes being driven down to below 60% – a sharp contrast to the 93% approval rating from critics.

Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi is out now.
