Gone With The Wind screening BANNED for being ‘racially insensitive’

The 1939 Oscar-winning classic has been screened at The Orpheum Theatre every summer for over three decades.

Now Gone With The Wind has been cancelled from next summer’s movie series following “numerous comments” after a recent screening.

According to Entertainment Weekly, The Orpheum Theatre Group said: “While title selections for the series are typically made in the spring of each year, the Orpheum has made this determination early in response to specific inquiries from patrons.

“The Orpheum appreciates feedback on its programming from all members of the mid-south community. The recent screening of Gone With the Wind at the Orpheum on Friday, August 11, 2017, generated numerous comments. The Orpheum carefully reviewed all of them.”

Comments on the cinema’s Facebook page included claims the film was “racist”, while another quoted a journalist who said: “Slowly but surely, we will rid this community of all tributes to white supremacy.

The debate surrounding Gone With The Wind has been around for decades. The film that follows life on a Southern plantation during the American Civil War and Reconstruction periods.

Its critics point out the film shows the Southern way of life, which included slavery, in a positive light – even being said to be Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels’ favourite film.

Gone With The Wind is the most financially successful film ever made, when adjusted for inflation, and saw supporting actress Hattie McDaniel become the first African American to win an Oscar.

The news surrounding Gone With The Wind’s cancellation comes following the recent events in Charlottesville and debates on Confederate statues.
