Amazon is opening 260 stores with no checkouts in fight with big supermarkets – confirmed

Amazon is getting ready to open 260 new cashierless grocery stores across the UK before the end of 2024. The roll out is part of Amazon’s scheme to beat the top leading supermarkets in the UK – find out more here.

The supermarkets are quick and easy for shoppers to buy products from.

All they need to do is scan a code on the Amazon app as they enter the shop, then they can add items to their bags.

The shops have hundreds of cameras and a network of sensors that detects the items in their bags.

When they walk out of the store, the charges will be automatically made to their account.

According to a Business Insider report, Amazon plans to open 60 stores next year, 100 stores in 2023 and 100 in 2024.

The document said: “In 2022, we assume a broader roll-out of two store launches per week by the end of [the] year, targeting 60 total openings. In 2023 and 2024, we are planning 100 store launches per year, in line with more aggressive opening programmes achieved by convenience stores in the UK in the last five years, Tesco’s, Sainsbury’s and Co-op have all exceeded 100 openings per year.”

While, there is no full list of coming locations, shoppers can expect that more stores are due to open in Greater London as there are currently six locations in the capital.

Amazon announced earlier in November that its seventh store will be in Holborn, London and it will be directly opposite Tesco’s first ever checkout-free store, GetGo.

30 of the upcoming UK stores are expected to open in London.

Opening hours of each store are from 7AM – 11PM.
