Why is there a swimming pool at the Gabba? How are fans selected to watch?

England fans may be glad to see the back of this first Test with Australia on the verge of a resounding win after the visitor’s batting order collapsed in their second innings.

But cricket fans at the Gabba may be hoping for the match to last that bit longer.

That’s because of an innovative idea that introduced a ‘Pool Deck’ to the Gabba stadium last December.

This is the first time the Pool Deck, set into the bottom of the grandstand with a clear screen separating the supporters and the outfield, has been open during an Ashes test.

Former cricketer-turned-journalist Simon Hughes recently said there is no doubt the new inclusion would cause a distraction for players.

“Of course it’s a distraction,” he said.

“But it could also prove a nice contrast to the awful abuse you get on the boundary. It would put you in a better mood.”

Why is there a swimming pool at the Gabba?

While cricket fans in England during the winter months will be piling on the layers to keep warm, supporters of the Ashes in Australia are treated to glorious sunshine.

And in an attempt to alleviate the experience of watching cricket even further, a 32,000 litre swimming pool was installed at the Gabba just under a year ago.

Attendances have dipped in recent years at the famous cricket ground and organisers hoped the new addition will help draw in bigger crowds.

How do fans get to take a dip in the swimming pool at the Gabba?

Supporters are ultimately picked at random to take a dip in the swimming pool.

There is enough room for 120 people to be selected, but supporters are encouraged to wear their best swimming attire if they wish to gain access to the Pool Deck.

A spokesperson from Cricket Australia explained it best last year.

They said: ”People just wear the best beach attire or swimwear and they will just be chosen at random from among the crowd to come onto the pool deck.

“We will have spotters going around and those with their pool gear, or a Hawaiian shirt or something similar, board shorts, that sort of thing.

“They have the chance of getting onto the pool deck and into the pool.”
