Liverpool news: BBC Sport pundit Mark Lawrenson makes Reds vs Chelsea prediction

That’s the verdict of BBC Sport pundit and former Reds star Mark Lawrenson, who’s tipping his old side to run out 2-1 winners.

Liverpool sit fifth in the Premier League ahead of the Anfield encounter, having picked up 22 points from their opening 11 games.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are three points and two places better off and travel to Merseyside off the back of 4-0 wins over West Brom and Qarabag.

Lawrenson believes the Blues will have to maintain that kind of form if they’re to have any hope of catching Premier League leaders Manchester City.

He expects their run of three straight victories in all competitions will come to an end when they take on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool though.

“I always expect Liverpool to raise their game against the big teams at Anfield,” Lawrenson explained toΒ BBC Sport.

“Eden Hazard has been fantastic for Chelsea in recent weeks, and his side are on a run of four straight wins in the Premier League.

“But the Blues are going to have to put together a much longer winning streak if they are going to catch up with leaders Manchester City, and I don’t see them doing that.

“It is very close between the pack of five teams that are below City, and they have been taking points off each other all season – which suits City fine.

“It will be interesting to see what the chasing pack do in January if they are still bunched together then.

“Normally that transfer window is more about the teams near the bottom of the table but this season who the top teams buy – and especially who they sell – is going to make a big difference to who finishes in the top four.”

Liverpool can leapfrog Chelsea into third if they win by six or more goals tomorrow and results elsewhere go their way this weekend.
