EU in CHAOS! Merkel ally WARNS no German government before Christmas – bloc RUDDERLESS

Stephan Mayer, of ’s CDU/CSU party, said it was a “big pity” that a coalition would not be formed before Christmas.

Germany’s deadlocked government coalition talks may have huge repercussions on the as three parties are thought to be deadlocked on the issue of immigration.

Speaking on the Today programme, on BBC Radio 4, Mr Mayer said: “We need a stable government. I think in order to avoid new elections, it’s time to talk with the Social Democrats. isn’t used to a minority government. 

“Certainly we won’t have a stable government until Christmas and that’s really a big pity. But, on the other hand, we have still a government which is in power and I’m really convinced that Europe, the European Union and the whole world can rely on our current Government.

“For instance, it lasted seven months in the Netherlands, to form a coalition last time and in 2014 it lasted four months in Belgium.”

But according to a top EU official, Europe will be “damaged” if Mrs Merkel, regarded by many as the mother of Europe, fails to form a government from the stalled coalition talks.

The remarks from the EU’s budget commissioner Guenther Oettinger come as the German Chancellor struggled to strike a governing coalition deal.

He said a failure to reach a deal would “damage Europe and strengthen the region’s populists” as the bloc waits for its economic powerhouse to form a government.

It comes as coalition talks collapsed on Sunday evening, as a 6pm deadline passed by without any agreement.

The biggest stumbling blocks in the three-way talks have been around an upper-limit of asylum-seekers in Germany, as well as the future use of coal in the country.

FDP leader Christian Lindner said there was “no basis of trust” between the parties.
