F1 news: McLaren open to Fernando Alonso competing in Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans in 2018

At least that’s what the British constructors’ chief Zak Brown has suggested in the build-up to the final race of the 2017 Formula One campaign.

Alonso has written his name into the F1 history books over the past 16 years and twice won the World Drivers’ Championship with Renault.

His interest in making his mark in the world of motorsport is not isolated to F1 though and this year he competed in the IndyCar Series.

Alonso has previously spoken of his desire to take part in the Le Mans 24 hour race too.

Brown has now revealed McLaren’s stance on their driver going after the Triple Crown – with one aspect of it, victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, already tied up.

“In an ideal world, we would love Fernando to win the triple crown in a McLaren,” said Brown.

“He’s won Monaco, I think we will go back to Indy one day and Le Mans is something we’re looking at.”

Speculation has indicated Alonso could compete in Le Mans next year with Toyota while McLaren develop a car for the race.

And Brown hinted McLaren would be happy for him to do so with another manufacturer.

“In the meantime, if he wants to get some experience at Daytona and Le Mans, we’re open to that,” he explained.
