A camera fitted inside the plane recorded the moment Galiotto held his phone aloft and fumbled it, causing it to fall to the ground outside.

He initially showed his annoyance as the phone quickly dropped 2,000ft where it landed near the beach without harming anyone

Using the Find My iPhone app, Galiotto located his phone where it was remarkably still intact.

It survived the fall with only a few scratches, Brazilian news outlet G1 reported.

The device had only been fitted with a standard silicone case and a screen protector.

Galiotto said: ‘I had faith that I would recover it. I thought, “If it didn’t fall in the water, we’ll find it.”

‘But for a few meters I could have hit someone, and, at that height I was flying, 2,000 feet, it was going to be a tragedy, can you imagine? But it wasn’t a tragedy, it had many emotions.’

The footage shows the filmmaker’s surprise as he finds the iPhone on the beach still working after the huge fall.

He said: ‘It’s something that, if you tell someone, they won’t believe.’
