Best supplements for skin: Take THESE five nutrients to combat acne, eczema and psoriasis

Skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis can be debilitating problem – and they’re a common problem.

It is thought up to 60 per cent of people in the UK have suffered from a skin disease at some point in their lifetime.

This includes acne which 28 per cent of the population admitted to suffering from, according to a British Skin Foundation survey published last year.

However, according to one expert, altering your diet slightly can help reduce symptoms of a number of skin conditions.

Daisy Whitbread, a nutritionist, has revealed the five key nutrients to ward off acne, eczema and psoriasis, and give your complexion a glow.

Omega-3 fatty acids

These can be found in oily fish like salmon. 

Daisy said: ‘It is one of the best sources of omega-3 essential fats, which act as a natural moisturiser and illuminator for your skin within. 

“If you have a lack of omega-3 in your diet it can lead to premature wrinkles and dry skin.

“It is also anti-inflammatory which can reduce symptoms of eczema.”

If you don’t like fish, she recommended taking an omega-3 supplement, such as Tom Oliver Omega3 Herring Caviar Capsules.

Vitamin C

This can be found in pomegranates, which also contain a number of other skin-loving nutrients.

“Pomegranates contain punicalagins, an extremely strong antioxidant which is also anti-inflammatory,” Daisy explained.

“They are a good source of vitamins A, C and E which are essential for healthy collagen formation.”

Collagen is important to the structure of the skin, and boosting it can have anti-ageing benefits.

Vitamin E

Daisy said: “The famous avocado is an excellent source of vitamin E, which helps skin retain its moisture and aids skin healing. 

“It contains healthy monounsaturated fats, known as oleic acid, which act as a natural moisturiser and softener to the skin in the epidermis layer.”

She recommended avocado on toast with mixed seeds as the perfect snack for skin.

Protein

The food group contains amino acids, which are essential for the skin and can be found in sprirulina along with other nutrients.

“Spirulina is known as a ‘complete food’ due to it’s exceptionally high nutrient content, which our bodies need,” said Daisy.

“These include protein, essential fats, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

“It is also jam-packed with amino acid which are the building blocks needed for collagen and elastin production.”

Vitamin A

This nutrient can be found in a variety of orange foods.

Daisy explained: ‘Orange vegetables such as carrots, squash, pumpkin and sweet potatoes contain particular high levels of beta – carotene and other carotenoids. 

“Just 100g of sweet potato provides the RDA for vitamin A. 

“Beta-carotene is also good for building up natural protection against the sun and preventing sun damage to the skin. 

“As psoriasis is an inflammatory condition, a diet of fruits and vegetables can help reduce signs of the condition.”

She recommended eating roast cubes of squash and sweet potatoes as a side dish, or added to a salad.
