WATCH: First quarter moon of winter tonight live stream

NASA is encouraging everyone to take time out to observe the moon as it passes the first quarter phase and appears brightly iluminated in the night sky.

The event is designed to get people, young and old, to observe the moon and its surface, either through a telescope, online or, depending on yor location, with the naked eye.

Noah Petro, deputy project scientist for NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, told Space.com: “It’s very exciting, especially if somebody doesn’t do it normally.”

NASA’s official website says: “International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) is an annual worldwide public event that encourages observation, appreciation, and understanding of our Moon and its connection to NASA planetary science and exploration, as well as the cultural and personal connections we all have with Earth’s nearest neighbour.

“Everyone on Earth is invited to join the celebration by hosting or attending an InOMN event — and uniting on one day each year to look at and learn about the Moon together.”

Online telescope service Slooh is running a live feed of the moon in all its glory from midnight BST, and users can sign up to the channel for free to see their breathtaking live images.

Activities, events, discussions and observations are taking place all over the world.
