US Election 2020: Trump PANICS party officials by blasting ‘most important’ donor

Sources told The Times that the President had a tense phone call from 87-year-old casino magnate and multi-billionaire Sheldon Adelson. Mr Adelson had contacted Mr Trump to talk about the US’ coronavirus relief policies.

But Mr Trump allegedly turned the conversation to funding for his re-election campaign instead – chiding the wealthy donor for not doing enough.

Now, reports have surfaced of Republicans desperately trying to recover the situation over fears Mr Adelson may cut his funding following the call.

One source said it was clear the President was not aware of just how much funding Mr Adelson had spent on Republican causes in the past.

Analysts have said Mr Adelson is perhaps the most important donor the Republican party has, donating hundreds of millions of dollars over the past four years.

The White House has not responded to requests for comment. Mr Adelson allegedly did not fire back at Mr Trump’s criticisms.

It is not clear what Mr Adelson’s next move will be regarding his funding for the president.

He has been a strong ally of Mr Trump in the past, despite the two men being rivals in the casino industry when Mr Trump was a businessman.

The billionaire even “had Mr Trump’s back,” according to former presidential advisor Steve Bannon, after shocking footage was released by The Washington Post in 2016 of the President appearing to boast about grabbing women by the crotch and saying “when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”

For months, most polls have put Joe Biden – the Democrat Party’s main rival to Mr Trump – ahead in national opinion.

In addition, Politico reports the Democratic campaign has been granted far more funding by donors than the Republican campaign has – nearly three times as much.

It is understood the Democrats have also reserved more than $70 million worth of television advertising airtime between now and the November election.

This is nearly $30 million more than the amount Mr Trump’s supporters have booked.

In other Trump campaign news, the official Twitter account for the president’s re-election campaign – called Team Trump – was temporarily banned from tweeting last week.

Twitter said it had enforced the account ban because it had posted a video of Mr Trump claiming children were “almost immune” from COVID-19.

Twitter said this was in violation of its rules on COVID-19 misinformation. The video was later removed by the account.
